PhD Workshop “Strategic decisions in academic writing”

What:
A discussion workshop “Strategic decisions in academic writing: tips for PhD students and young scholars”. The seminar will focus on the key steps in a writing research paper to be published in a good journal. This will include:
- Finding a broad research area that gives a stream of interesting papers that are publishable
- Developing and linking a sound research question with an appropriate theoretical framework and relevant methodology
- Specific challenges in conducting the research (obtaining data, testing and generating results including unexpected findings, testing and endogeneity, knowing which results to include and exclude)
- Main challenges in getting published and what the reviewers may ask to do.
The discussion will utilise an example of three papers from the field of corporate finance / governance (see Recommended pre-reading).

Lecturer:
Prof Martin Bugeja, University of Technology Sidney, Business School
Martin’s current research interests focus on mergers and acquisitions, intangible assets, corporate governance and board of director compensation. His papers have been published in international journals including The Accounting Review, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Business, Finance and Accounting, British Accounting Review, Accounting and Business Research, Accounting and Finance or Abacus.
